Charlie Fulbright

… Charlie Fulbright!

If you have attended any Battle Creek Pride’s events in the last 9 years, then you probably know Charlie Fulbright. Aside from the fact that everyone knows he loves glitter, there are a few personal things about him you may not know.

1. His favorite musical is RENT.

“Not only is the music great, it tells a story. It is real life. AIDS, drugs, and being LGBTQ is part of life. No day but today!”

2. He started the first GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) at Lakeview.

“When I was in high school, I don’t remember many, if any LGBTQ students. Then I came out in 10th grade, and I wanted to make a difference. At the time, having a specific GSA was a bit overwhelming for the time, so I created, with the help of my girlfriends, EASOSE.(Equality And Safety Of Students Everywhere)

3. He was the lead on getting the nondiscrimination ordinance passed in Battle Creek.

“Granted, I wasn’t that political, and my friend, and commissioner at the time Andy Helmboldt introduced the language for the city. Although canvassing and holding trainings for volunteers weekly felt like an eternity, it got us 1,129 signatures to present to the city.”

4. He has hosted an exchange student from Germany.

“Being a host parent was the stepping stone to becoming a foster parent for 4 years. Being a Dad is one role that can only be measured with love, and I have a lot of love to give.”

5. He has been with his husband since 2004.

“One of the highlights of my life is being able to watch our family grow. My husband Chris, and I have been friends, boyfriends, roommates, partners, and now husbands. Although legally it has only been 6 years, we use our wedding date as our real anniversary. May 20th, 2006.
