Jean Candelaria As a first-year member of the BC Pride Board of Directors, Jean Candelaria knows a lot about different cultures. And languages. And cooking. And drag. And Steven Universe (don’t judge!). But there are a few things about Jean you may not know. For instance…1. He’s from out of town.“I was born in Brooklyn, New York, but I was raised in Orlando, Florida. I’ve only lived in Battle Creek for ten months now, but so far, it feels like home – except in the wintertime.”2. He has a versatile tongue.“My mother is from Ecuador and my father is from Puerto Rico, which means I can speak Spanish as well as English. So if you ever need an interpreter, “Soy tu hombre.”3. He loves to cook.“I used to prepare meals for my church, so I’m used to cooking for large gatherings. I have a few specialties, but whatever you need I can serve it up.”4. He’s a big fan of the art of drag.“When I was younger I didn’t like drag at all. I was actually a little scared of it because I didn’t really understand it. But when I went to my first White Party back in Orlando I talked to some of the queens about what they do, and that changed everything. Now I absolutely love it. And I loved being a judge at the Mx. BC Pride pageant. It was so much fun!”5. He digs cartoons.“When I was just a child I didn’t want to sleep in my own bedroom. So my mom decorated my entire room in SpongeBob SquarePants stuff – sheets, pillowcases, posters, stickers, everything – because that was my favorite cartoon and it meant a lot to me. And now, as an adult, I still watch Steven Universe and lots of other cartoons. Just recently I realized that I could stream episodes of CatDog, and I totally went down a rabbit hole. But that’s me.”
